Breeding ATBs

blueta Sep 01, 2007 11:09 AM

I've searched around for a while but still didn't find out what's all involved in breeding atb's. I have a male about 4ft long (head to tip of tail). He's kind of hard to measure since he's always trying to kill me Anyway I'll be looking into picking up a female very soon and would like to breed them. He is in a naturalistic 70 gallon. I would have to put the female into a tupperware or something because of space limitations and not wanting to keep them together. Since his cage is so big and well planted/lots of perches should I introduce the female to his cage when time to breed? Also ANY help on getting me started is going to be appreciated.

ATBs are actually not hard to breed at all usually. Most of the time mine breed without any special cycling and regardless of who gets introduced to who's cage. You'll have an easier time though introducing the male into the females cage if you have him in a planted tank. Trust me, you don't wanna be dealing with trying to pull her back out once she's bred and destroy a beautiful display tank (I've done it). For a reluctant breeder, I've had success with just one to four weeks of cooler temperatures, but most of the time this hasn't been necessary. Hope this helps.
