papuans shedding

JFM Sep 01, 2007 03:11 PM

Hi, I was wondering if any of you papuan python keepers have experienced the same thing I have. My pair is 10' and 6'. Both are awersome snakes, very calm and docile and will eat anything. The only thing weird about them is that they do not have one or even 2 piece sheds. Their sheds come off in lots of pieces. I can raise the humidity or not in their cages and it does not matter. It does not seem to bother them and they have no retained eyecaps or stuck sheds.

Anyway, just wondering. Thanks

Yep, my pair which are a little larger than yours do the same thing and have for quite a while. My white lipped adults are the same way, but the babies and juvies often shed in one piece. I haven't worried about it because it never seemed problematic, just more of a pain to clean out of the cage.

my big ones shed alot better when i soak them during their opaque phase of ecdysis. I do this because they drink alot of water if you put them in it, but not so much if oyu just provide them with a dish. Try it and youll notice their skin will look more full, shiney, irridescent, etc. Also, this soaking gives me a way to interact with them fairly regularly.

My 2 12'ers always shed like someone carved them into pieces. They're alway alert, a bit agressive, and sound like puff adders.

Thanks for all your input and answers. I did put my big papuan in the tub for awhile and his shed was more or less in one piece. Let me know if any of you all have had any breeding success.
