Morphs at PetLand

iwish7284 Sep 01, 2007 03:42 PM

I went into petland to look around and seen many snakes that I haven't seen in local petstores before. Surprisingly they had a pastel BP (No one knew the sex) it was $400. They said they get het piebalds, piebalds, pastels, and spiders, which I think is awesome, because it is creating more interest in morph's by supplying them at a local level. However, I was pretty disgusted by all their snake's living conditions. Not one hidebox. The pastel was also missing scales on his head from lack of proper humidity.

Just my two cents,
Nick

I wonder if anyone that goes to Petland is willing to spend $400 on a snake? I stop in, probably like you do just to poke around and I always think I am going to find something unusual (never do).

You would think that anyone who goes to Petland or Petco or a little mom & pop petstore for pets or supplies, really doesnt know about what the real deal is...

I sometimes buy rats at Petland, but I try not to pay retail prices whenever possible. You would think that anyone that knows what a Pastel even is, would be on here buying it for $125? I guess it could be a female for $400, but you really got to think that somebody (most likely somebody who is on this site too) is selling a male at their local shop? I have unloaded snakes at the local shop cheap. I dont even mention when they are sometimes hets. I just trade the extras for rats ith the lady at ptco when the snakes dont fit in my plans. The amount I breed every year isnt worth it.

I bet you if you were to give the location of the pet store, there is a very good chance someone on here is selling it trying to get a few more dollars and avoid the shipping?

Interesting stuff...small world.

Alan, PetWorld here in Madison has a tank full of early '07 pastel males for $299.99 each. They were bred by someone local and sold to the store at wholesale to resell. It doesn't matter if someone "knows" what a pastel is or even has a clue about genetics. Usually people go to pet stores and buy something like that because it's "pretty" or "cool". If people are willing to drop $150 on a kitten from a pet shop, I'm sure there are kids who will spend $300 on "that cool yellow ball python" without knowing what it really is or has the potential for.

I agree, most of the purchases from your petstores are usually impulse buys. The people see a really pretty animal and the have to have it... They don't know anything about it or what the true market value of the animal is so they pay what the store is asking because in there mind it is worth it to have this beautiful animal.
Now if the animal is lucky, since the new owner invested so much they are going to learn as much as they can about the husbandry of there new pet. Provide it with the best care possible and it will have a happy life as a pet. Though, we all know that this is not the case alot of the time.... people just don't realize that there new little friend has special requirements to survive or just don't care enough to find out.

Petland is a franchise, which means that the way reptiles are handled will vary greatly from store to store, depending on the interest/knowledge of the local owner/manager. I can tell you that Petland as a company does not stress herps as a significant part of their business plan. It's "all about the puppies" to them! But there are a few Petlands out there whose owners are very interested and involved, and they do a very good job with their reptiles.

I can understand if they had no water and very dirty cages , but "no-hide box" and a "few missing scales " wouldn't envoke a "disgusting" rating with me . Some of the most sought after collections I'm sure has an investment snake bitten froma rat/mouse grabbed on the wrong end...it's something that sometimes happens when you feed live , which i'm sure they probably do .I'm assuming they wouldn't take the time to tong feed F/T . Just my 2 cents ,
