Substrate Question....

DavidKendrick Sep 01, 2007 06:15 PM

I was trying to get some feedback on using Western Hemlock Tree and Douglas Fir wood shavings as substrate...Just curious..I came across this stuff today, and have been trying to find some pros and cons...

It claims to be a hypoallergenic bedding material....Dust Free...and super absorbant..What do you guys think? Every used anything like it? Its pretty cheap, and its made locally...I was thinking about starting to use it in our larger snake enclosures...But I have never heard anything good or bad about Western Hemlock Tree and Douglas Fir as bedding...What do you guys think? Here is the link to it....

Hi David,
Are you asking about a blend of Hemlock and Fir? I know a few people using fir, and liking it over aspen and other substrates. It doesn't discolor when sprayed with water. I know nothing about Hemlock, but I've wondered about it myself. Let me know if you find out anything other than this thread.
I used to use pine for my rat cages, but I did switch to fir and it controls the odor so much better. I may try it in a couple snake cages for awhile.
I hope you and Amanda are doing well -- and your collection too. Take care

Hey David,
Thanks for the reply, and congrats on the those Abby's you produced...very cool stuff

I have been trying to find a good bedding, something new to try out, I came across this stuff...

gemshavings.com/whites.htm

They say its Dust Free, Hypoallergenic(No Phenols), super absorbant...bla..bla..bla...

It sounded pretty safe, and seems to be working fine...Its made here in the Northwest, and its REALLY cheap, and readily available...so I figured I would give it a try...I can seem to find anything negative about it....Aspen has always molded to quickly on me if water is spilled, and Cyprus is good, but seems harder and harder to find the good stuff...(Believe me there is a difference in the good stuff and the stuff you guy at Home Depot)....So I guess we will see...I put in in all the larger snake enclosures...and they seem to like it...all of them too huge BM's...RIGHT after I put them back..lol...
