easterns eggs hatched(what an adventure)

teaspoon Sep 01, 2007 10:01 PM

About 8 or 9 weeks ago I found two black eastern hognose snakes. Both were gravid, and between the two of them i got 53 eggs! 16 were tiny and infertile, a few more were healthy looking but infertile, and some went moldy. But after about 7 weeks of incubation, 29 of them pipped! Well, that was all wonderful and fantastic until they began disapearing. By the time I had 11 empty egg shells, I only had 3 snakes. There seemed to be no possible way for the haatchlings to escape and I don't think that the three would have eaten the other 8, no matter how hungry they were. I searched the room for the 8 invisible snakes(that's what I was calling them) and found all of them! (apparently, they were visible). i would check the incubator every 30 minutes or so, and get the newer ones befor they escaped, though some did escape, but they usually wern't very far. Unfortunately one is still missing, however I did notice that theres a hole in the floor thats plenty big enough for a snake to go into. It was a miracle that none of the others went in it! I went and checked the incubator again and there was another tiny baby, but where was his head? He had stuck his head out of a ventalation hole in the back of the incubator, it was just big enough for him to wiggle through! i hadn't even known that it was there! i plugged up the hole. Well, i solved the mystery of the disappearing snakes. now I've got 20 little hatchlings, and 8 more about to come out of their eggs. the babies are beautiful, grey patterned with iridesent black bellies. unfortunantly i can't sell them around here because they're native, but I might keep a pair for myself, feed the rest of them a few meals, and set them free. Does anyone now if I'd be aloud to sell them privatly?(like to a person, not a pet store)
well, that my story, it was exciting(yet stressful). Thanks for reading.

where do you live....it might be legal to gift them

FloridaHogs Sep 03, 2007 04:30 PM

My thoughts exactly. It is most likely illegal to release them, possibly to sell them depending where you live. Might even be illegal to posses them, as they are protected in some states. Really need to know what state you are in to answer your questions.

IP would suggest virginia as a location... can't remember but I seem to think they allow a person up to 5 of any individual non-protected native herp species.

i live in northern Virgina, i'm intrested in selling them, but I wouldn't be comfortable with shipping them. Does anybody know if its legal? It should be legal to release them because the mothers were from va, but i don't know about selling them, they are captive bred though(or captive hatched anyway) and captive bred corn snake(which are native to va) are sold here all the time. So if your intrested in buying one(or some) or if you know more about va reptile-keeping laws, please let me know.

Be careful dude! It is illegal to sell eastern hogs in Va.I know,it sux! I have a really nice trio and can't breed them because of the law.As far as corns go,you have to have a permit to sell those too, unless they are amels. Jeff

Well, in FL you are not suppose to release any animal that has been in captivity, regardless of where the mama came from. The potential of releasing a disease into the native population is to great. Not to mention, they do not have the natural fear of humans.

they ain't captive bred....they are basically wild caught...some like to say "CAPTIVE HATCHED"....they are F1 from wild caught...their instinctive behavior is still in tact....cut 'em loose...you can't need $$$ that bad....i have the same discussion with youngsters here...did you release the adults???....if you don't... how many potential snakes were removed??.....remember those adults survived to reach breeding age and produce young...since many young don't survive you could rationalize your sales with.."well most of them die anyway" or "were did all the original breeders come from"..that was a different time...things were way different .....the adults are key to a viable breeding population .....what's more important....a couple bucks or being able to go out and see hoggies in the environment?????

I've decided to set them free. Maybe keep one. the more I think about it, the more I feel like I should. At the moment, I don't have enough time to take good care of them all anyway, But thank-you for your intrest in them.
