Any of you use this method of catching snakes?

repzoo44 Aug 20, 2003 11:19 PM

I was reading my Peterson guide and in the beginning it talks about ways to catch snakes. One way is to take the snake by the tail and fling it between your legs. Then you close your legs to trap the snake then gently pull it through your legs until you get to the head at which point you can grab it behind the head. Just seemed like a strange way of doing things and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this. Thanks. EP

Yes. I caught a large Coachwhip that way. I was wearing jeans though. Preferable to getting bit on the bare arms or head/neck/chest/breast/face area.

That's an old trick to prevent a bloodletting when catching water snakes and racers of any size. They cannot bite through an ordinary pair of jeans. I did catch some flak when employing this technique, however. I took a co-worker out into the Everglades and employed this technique to catch a large water snake, which latched on to my pants with a vengeance. Upon returning to work, a couple of ladies were cackling like old hens about how after hearing that a "moccasin" had bit me on the balls, they were surprised I was able to walk. After figuring out that my buddy had sold me out, I admitted that my balls were still a bit swollen, and that it was painful to walk. However, I went on to tell them that if it wasn't for my "pal" sucking the poison out, I would have been a dead man. That really got them roaring.............lol.
