beginner here..Have a question on shedding? ? ?

svt-sinister Aug 20, 2003 11:21 PM

I just bought a Queretaro Kingsnake and the guy it looks like its about to shed cause his eyes are cloudy and skin is dull. My question is, How long does shedding take? And when in shedding mode, he mostly stays in 1 spot for a long time, is this normal? ? ?

There is no set time, but 7-10 days after going "blue" is a good rule. His eyes should clear up before he sheds, this is normal. It is important to keep the humidity up at this time. You can mist daily, or add some moist sphagnum to his favorite hide spot. he may refuse to eat at this time too, but this also is normal. As far as remaining in one place that is common. With his eyes cloudy, he has lost the use of one of his senses and is probably very nervous. He is probably best left alone for a few days just to avoid stress. keep an eye on him once he starts to shed. If some of the skin stays on, give him a soak for a few minutes and then it is okay to GENTLY help him off with the rest, but give him a few hours to work the skin off himself before doing this. Good luck, there is nothing more beautiful than a snake with a brite shiny new skin!
