RO water for the long term

Jeff Hardwick Sep 02, 2007 04:53 PM

Hi all, I've used only reverse osmosis water (for various reasons) for the last 3 years on a collection of 150 Lampropeltids with no obvious ill effects. I was concerned about a lack of certain common minerals (sodium, calcium) but assumed the snakes would acquire these from their food sources which is apparently correct judging from their overall health.
Yes, breeding has been very successful.

My question is: who else out there is using RO water as the sole water source for their snakes and have you noticed any metabolic changes or disorders?
Thanx in advance, Jeff

No I havn't used this. However the tall tails of it's use turning snakes into prunes after a day or two are obviously just that. Poor keepers looking for somthing to blame I'd think.

You do seem somewhat knowledgeable on the topic, and know that it is pretty close to pure H20. Any problems associated with such pure water lie in it's name. Osmosis. Atoms free to move will do so from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. When a snake drinks typical water, it is still of lower electrolyte concentration than the snake's tissues. This is obviously natural and easily compensated for by the animal. However this is the reason why ill or dehydrated animals are given such things as gatorade, or ringers solution ect. No with RO water, there is a much bigger gradient to compensate for. Obviously your snakes are doing fine with it, thus it is do-able. If any risks were to be apparent, you might see it on neonate animals, or new imports or otherwise compromised animals. The minerals in water don't really go towards nutritional supplementation in snakes (whole body prey), so that isn't much of an issue.

For my opinion, I think there are more con's than pro's regarding RO (having to buy it being one of them), so I don't use it. I don't think it's necessarily a poor choice to use it though.

I hope this helps somewhat

that's a lot of kings and milks, what do you keep? Can you share some pictures? I bought my first lampropeltids last weekend, a pair of mexican black kingsnakes.

Thanx for the input Ian, I'm hoping others will post their experiences with water types also. BTW, since ground water supplies aren't getting better with time and human carelessness, more homes are fitted with RO units now and the whole bottled water/massive waste issue is neatly resolved...but that's a seperate issue for a green forum. The dog and cat crowd might have more documented information re the use of purified water(s)actually.
I'm a huge fan of locality triangulum for north, central, and south America. If you search my name in the photo forum there should still be a reasonable archive of stuff and if you drop me a line, I can send you to another site where I archive a lot of photos.

So, anybody else with water issues and experiences? Who spoils their snakes rotten with Perrier?

I took a look, very nice collection. It must've taken a long time to build it.
