Windex to clean terrarium?

domingoakasunday Sep 02, 2007 06:09 PM

What do you use to clean the glass of a terrarium? Is there something that is python safe? How long do I have to wait after cleaning to put her back in?

There are things better than glass cleaner but even it is ok. I'd just make sure it has dried before putting snakes back in and you should be fine.

I wait until I can't smell it anymore. The biggest problem with most commercial glass cleaners is that they use ammonia, which is one of the things you're trying to clean out of the tank. These days I use a bleach solution to clean, sometimes with a little liquid dish soap, then rinse thoroughly. You could also use a little vinegar in water (the old fashioned home brew glass cleaner). A little vinegar shouldn't hurt the snakes at all, and would help eliminate ammonia from urine and urates.

I use vinegar to clean the glass on my fishtank because that is one place where I really don't want any ammonia. It works just as well as windex without the potential for poisoning the animals.

Ralphs. Just about any brand will do, as long as it's plain ole white vinegar.

I liked the vinegar suggestion, however, I just have been using 1-tsp of plain bleach to a couple quarts of cold water. I wipe the glass sides down and then re-wipe with a damp cloth with only clean water on it. I sometimes use the Clorox Anywhere cleaner for spot cleaning with the snake still in the tank. I spray it on the rag first away from the tank then wipe the area to be cleaned, then re-wipe with a clean damp (with only water) rag. The Clorox Anywhere is supposed to be safe even to use directly on stuff children handle. I dont trust it around things my kids put in their mouths or eat directy off of however. I believe this Clorox Anywhere is actually really diluted bleach, but I am afraif to make my own and just buy a bottle of Anywhere from time to time for spot cleaning.

Hope this helps.

I'm really fond of using the clorox wipes to clean out my tubs for the weekly cleaning. I do something similar - I wipe down with the wipe and then spray it with water and wipe it again. Takes five minutes to clean each tub every week.

I've never seen the clorox anywhere in the store. Is that in the same section with the other bleachy products?

Yes. The Clorox Anywhere is by the tile cleaners and bathroom stuff, where I shop anyway.
