handeling the snake

svt-sinister Aug 20, 2003 11:25 PM

I just got a kingsnake and its been in his/her cage for about 1 1/2 days now. Do i have to let the snake get use to the cage first or can i handle him right away? Does it really matter??

I'd leave him alone for a few days before handling him. New enclosures can be stressful, so give him some time for peace and quiet, to get used to it. If he seems relatively active, doing a lot of probing and "exploring," he's still checking out his new home. Eventually he'll find his favorite place (usually a hidey spot) and start to settle down there. That's a good sign that the stress levels are back down, and it's okay to start handling (assuming he isn't going into shed or has just eaten).

I would wait a few more days before handling. This will really help your snake to settle in nicely.

I handled my new snakes not long after introducing them to their new home. They seem rather calm in my hands, but I handled them quite a bit before I brought them home from the show. They seemed less stressed in my hands. Generally, it is a good idea to wait to handle or feed the snakes when introduced to a new enclosure. Give them an adjustment period where stress is minimized.
