handling young

darkstarluke Sep 02, 2007 07:12 PM

i have a 2 month old and was wondering about handling. i read on another site forum that they shouldn't be handled until a year of age. im worried now as to if any damaged occured in my handling (kinking, ect.). should i stop holding it?

i have been handling it to try and make it less aggressive. it was a bit nippy at first and, after only a few tries, i now can hold it without any strikes. i get it out by carefully lifting the head or the nearest coil to the head with tongs (open tongs and i dont close them during this time ever. i say this because i don't want you to think that i am squeezing the snake at all) up which stimulates the animal to start moving on it. i then put my hand under it and let it move to my hand. i only lift the animal with the tongs and am very gentle. this is not a daily activity. im doing it a few times a week though.
the snake seems fine and moves around with no problems.

should i stop this all together and just contiue touching the snake every once and a while to get it accustomed to touch or can i contiue?

Usually the problem occurs when people attempt to remove the tails off the perch, or pull the babies from the perch. If it is climbing off on it's own, then you shouldn't have too much trouble. If I have to handle a baby at all, I usually take it out on it's perch and don't try to remove it at all. If it crawls off on it's own, then I will weigh or whatever. Mostly that's the only time I have them out except for pictures. They are quite fragile.

so should i stop handling it all together or only handle it when it crawls off the perch

I would avoid excessive handling right now unless it's necessary. Although many chondros are quite nice to handle (my Sorong being quite docile) they still aren't like a cornsnake where you'd take them out daily. If the baby is relatively mellow, it will most likely stay that way. If you do take it out for weighing or photos, I'd do so on the perch and let it make the moves. If it crawls off, then it does. Still, if it gets suddenly startled by something,it's possible it will hurt itself.
