Cat keeps bringing home snakes ...

rep Aug 20, 2003 11:30 PM

Hello all,
my cat always use to bring home water snakes (I let them go by the lake), but today he brought something different. Well, I live in central Florida, in an apartment complex. There is a lake across the street from my apartment where the cat keeps getting the snakes, so I think he got this from the lake too. I was outside and I saw my cat playing with something in the mulch (the neighbors saw a snake around there once), so he might have got it from there. It was small, under a foot. It was a few different colors, brown and green are the colors I remember seeing on it most. It didn't have strips like a gartner, it had like dimonds of different colors on its body. Anyone know what it might be? Thanks for any future help, bye all.

Quite possibly a young water snake, although without more detail on the pattern/color it's hard to pin it down to a specific species. Young water snakes generally are patterned similarly to adults, but are much bolder with much more contrast in the pattern.

Insufficient detail for me to hazard a guess. Since you live in Florida, however, here's a site you may wish to save for future reference.
