Borba's BIG litter

Jeff Clark Sep 03, 2007 09:36 PM

Borba is my largest female BRB. She has looked extremely gravid and seemed to be ready to lay for the last couple of weeks. Today she laid 31 live babies plus 2 stillborn and 7 or more slugs. My daughter checked on the snakes this morning and Borba was in the middle of laying the litter then. Borba ate one slug while my daughter was watching her. When I got home from Florida this afternoon the litter was completely laid and the babies were crawling around in the cage. There was one oddity in this litter. One baby was still resting in a membrane with his nose exposed. There was a very large mass inside the membrane with him that looked like a concave section of a slug. The baby is healthy and weighs 15 grams compared to the other babies which weigh 26 to 29 grams. I am not sure if this is a case of part of the egg mass going bad and leaving a healthy section that this baby developed from or perhaps this may have been a case of twins where one of the twins died very early. Borba is a 10 or 11 year old that was born here. The father of this litter was probably Lorio a 7 or 8 year old male from Gary Lorio. There was no mating observed when they were kept together during march. The sex ratio of the litter is 12.19.

on the newest litter of BRB's

I have a request if you don't mind.....
When you start to post some pictures, would you post a pic of a slug please. I know it might sound kinda gross, but I'd like to know what it looks like.
Thanks,
Rob

Ok, I think I understand the stillborn. Dies at birth or just inside mom.
What the heck is a slug? Is it the material that was supposed to be a baby that never formed? It had to do something. It can't pass out of mom, so it solidifies? Is that even close?

Yeah, a still born would be a full developed baby that for some reason is not alive.

A preemie is similar to a stillborn except the reason it's not alive is more obvious, it's not full term and not fully developed.

A slug is an unfertilized ova (egg) It solidifies over time inside the mom into the lumpy yellow masses you see in the pic.

Congrats on the huge litter it sounds to me like you had a set of twins then one died while in development. Do twin snakes happen often? That would be pretty cool especially if they were very good looking animals, to have an exact copy of the other

Tim,
..Twins are fairly common. In about 140 litters and clutches of boids here I have had a pair of twin Jungle Carpet Pythons that did fine, twin Argentinian Rainbows last year that did not thrive and a two headed Colombian Rainbow Boa about 12 years ago that lived 5 or 6 weeks.

Congratulations on the babies, looks like things evened out
after the small litter! Just curious, what is the
biggest litter you've ever had? (That question is for
everyone else as well.)

Thanks,
Ed

I do love this story, most have already heard it numerous times...

Boo was bad girl, her first three breeding attempts ended up in slugs and preemies, not one single viable baby. I decided she must be infertile and put her up for sale as a non fertile pet only female. Had some bites at a show including call backs after the show but nobody bought her. Left her in the colony and the next year (2004) she gave me 31 babies. She musta got the hint. Followed that huge litter with 26 and 26, Turned from the worst producer to the highest producer I have.

Hmmm, I guess 31 is the magic number!
I wonder what the largest known BRB litter is?

Great story. Maybe Boo snuck out one night
and visited a fertility clinic???

Thanks,
Ed

I'll stick with the shock of almost being sold. She decided she didn't want to lose her comfy lifestyle....

Waiter brings food on a regular basis.

Bus boy (looks a lot like the waiter) keeps water dish filled with clean fresh water.

Janitor (also looks a lot like the waiter) clean up all my messes.

Match maker (hmmm, also looks a lot like the waiter) arranges dates with studly males.

Nanny (oddly enough, also looks a lot like the waiter) takes away babies and cares for them.

The male / female ratio seems good too (maybe its is just my thinking - as I am looking for some females)...

Mike,
..Good ratio in this litter and bad ratio in the 8/30 litter.
No problem on sending you some females. It will be a couple weeks before these two good litters and the smaller one all eat and shed. I will make a slideshow then.
