Xmas Mts sold by state of TX

Herpo Sep 04, 2007 01:34 AM

I read an article in the Ft. Worth Star Telegram today which said that the state had sold off Since I had planned to bring home the article I didn't memorize the particulars and then I left it in ft. worth. However, it was deeded to the state in the 50's by a foundatdion with the proviso that it not be developed and be made available to the people of the state. It was placed in the land bank rather than TPWD. Before being sold it was, apparently, offered to TPWD and US park services, both of which turned it down. It was then put up for bids and six bids were recieved and the state is debating which bid to take. It seems that the state has been selling off a lot of land lately which was donated to the state and then placed in the land bank rather than being made available for public use. some of it is fairly valuable land. I wish I could remember the amount of land - 1900 acres? 9600 acres? dunno. The foundation which gave it to the state has informed them that if they sell it it will be their final contact with the state of Texas.

If I can find the article, which was in section B of today (monday's) paper, I'll post in full.

Here's a link to an article a couple of days ago:

I haven't seen one yet on a decision on the sale. Let's hope the deed restrictions hold up in court on it. It is a sad day for Big Bend is they don't. This reminds me so much of Arizona where I live. There are huge areas of State land here that are biologically, archaeologically, and just plain scenically valuable that are gradually getting auctioned off by the state because of the way state lands were set up to benefit education. How about we support education with taxes and save the land? These sales suck IMHO.

Send an email to land commissioner, Jerry Patterson, he is responsible. He says this is being done to raise money for the Permanent School Fund.
