What wattage mercury vapor buld to get for free roaming setup?

acurasquirrel Aug 21, 2003 02:08 AM

I have kept chameleons for a while but this will the first time working with a free range set up as well as mercury vapor bulbs. I need to know what wattage the 100 watt or 160 watt flood to use for this setup. The setup isnt complete yet Im waiting on some x10 stuff to get to me so I can automate everything with my computer. Im also building a basin so to say which drains outside.

I think 100w would be plenty for your setup, the uv supposedly goes over three feet away from the bulb. Actually your flourescent looks close enough to emit uv down to the plant (with the uv flourescent bulbs in it), and they are better, I think, than floods, which tend to blow out easily. then you can use a halogen spot which puts out a much more complimenting color and brings out the chams colors better. just my little opinion mind you.
what do yu use to control with the computer?? what software? That sounds interesting.

So you dont think I need a mercury vapor just a halogen for basking. Its a male panther chameleon. Im using x10 home automation products, the heart of the system is the firecraker c117a unit which plugs into your serial port. then a tranceiver module picked up the on and off commands from the firecracker and in turn the lights or misting system is turned on or off. im using the Fuse software.

I know you need uv, the scource is variable. I would get flourescent for uv and a spot or flood halogen for the nice colors , although this is strictly my opinion and subject to personal preferences. The uv from the flourescent tubes does not reach very far, like a couple of feet, but you should research this. The halogen just makes their color come out better in my opinion, and the flourescent looks close enough, when it has uv tubes, to be effective. thanx for the info on the x10.

oh, forgot the question, lol, I think a 150 would be fine for basking, but I am not an expert by any means.
