Hi Im thinking of getting a new snake i have kept kenyan sand boas, a dumerils, a hondo, and a several lizards and i am wondering what everyone else thinks are the "best" snakes. I would prefer something that doesnt get any longer than 8 feet. thanks for your opinion/help!

I'd suggest a Ball Python. They don't get very big, and are extremely friendly. I've had mine for 4 years now, and he has never even struck at me. He eats without question, isn't messy, and is good around all ages of people. If you want it to get to the max size, I'd suggest a big tank for it. I've noticed my python won't grow unless he has room. He stops when he gets to big for a tank. But all in all, they're extremely friendly and easy to take care of.

Thanks for your advice but Im looking for something a little more colorful and i dont have the money for a different morph. I was thinking of a rainbow boa, or maybe a jungle carpet python...

the size of the enclosure doesnt affect growth, as long as they keep eating until they reach maximum size

What do you like in a snake? I love my ratsnakes. I also love my Western Hognoses. Favorite too is my Children's that I've bred for 4 years. All three are explorers, love to eat and easy to handle once they realize you are not feeding them.

For giant mellow I love my Python curtus....Sumatran Short Tail AKA Black Blood Python. Seems to be maxing at 5 ft or so and 15#. Other bloods would get too big for you likely.

wow, I can't believe no one has mentioned corn snakes!!! Not only are they good beginner snakes, but great additions to any advance collection too! They are extremely affordable, very simple to care for, and very active. I have several snakes (check out my signature) but still love the corns...actually, me and my wife were in Petco Wed., and they had some beautiful babies that she wanted...they had them on sale for $25 so we got them! (don't have them listed yet, but I think I'm going to name them Romulus and Remus). They come in about any range of colors, and they are not too big, or too small. Do a search for corn snake morphs and just look at all your options!
Another options is a hogg island boa; they don't grow as big as your mainland boas, but have that boa look...only down side is if you want something colorful, you're not going to find a color hogg island boa!

Why not some of the pituophis? Bulls, Gophers and Pines. They get to 6 feet for most, don't require any special humidity, are excelent feeders for the most part. They do however produce more freqent poo's lol
Heres my male black pine snake. He's right at the 6 foot mark right now
