Hatchling needs identifying.

Hollychan Sep 05, 2007 08:04 PM

I'm usually pretty good at identifying snakes, but not always when they're really young. I found this guy in Santee, South Carolina while we were staying in a cabin in the state park. He was living at the edge of the lake. Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, let me revise that... "he IS still living at the edge of the lake." I found the little guy while I was out walking, snapped a couple of pictures of him and left him alone. If I'd had one of my travel cages with me, I probably would've brought him home, he had beautiful coloring. The picture I posted was the clearest one I managed to get, but I can post more if needed.

Looks to be a Redbelly, Storeria occipitomaculata , or Brown Snake, Storeria dekayi

The light patch at the base of the head makes me say Red-bellied Snake

I think its a brown or dekays snake

Definitely a red belly, and I don't believe it's a hatchling. They are very small snakes as adults, and also live bearers I believe.

Just confirmed, they are live bearers and are usually 8-10" as adults.

in addition, the young have a bright white ring around theirn neck that lasts for a number of months before fading into just a light patch. I think the color change occurs at four inches more or less

Thanks guys, the pictures I've found of Redbellies look a LOT like him. I only thought hatchling at first because of his size. Thanks a ton. ^_^
