Egg Bound Beardie Help!

boodanner Sep 05, 2007 09:50 PM

My one year old unbred lady laid 8 eggs on Monday. She wasn't acting right so I took her to the vet. They xrayed her and found more eggs. She's not eating very restless. Vet suggested give her a nesting box plus gave me a calcium supplement. Anyone have suggestions or experience

Hi
yes i would make a nesting side mix some potsoil with some zand and make it abit moist.
you also can use posoil alone r zand alone only you need to make it moist.
make it 10-12 inches deep you can with a spoon make a begin of a tunnel and put her front of it.
you also can give here a bath .
schoulder deep and feel with youre wrist if its not to hot.
i would try to give her some water .

mine vet dith a very nice thing.
normal you use medicines to get the eggs out.
mine vet dith with a straw ,in vent and then suck egg empty one by one so she pooped out only the eggshell .

I 2nd what B22 wrote. I have used potting soil in the past but switched to moist sand this year with good success. You can either put a big pile in the enclosure or use a large plastic container with one side cut out. I make a mound in the corner with about a 45 degree slope. Pack the sand lightly so it doesn't collapse but is not so tight that the dragon can't dig it out easily. Then make a starter hole a little wider than your dragon and 6 inches or so deep. Ideally the sand should be about 85. You can heat the sand in the oven or just use hot water to moisten it. It should be wet enough to make a ball in your had but not nearly wet enough for water to drip out.

Then show her the hole. Sometimes I hold the dragon and then stick her head in the hole so she gets it. Hydration as B22 said is also important. I'd drip water on her nose with an eyedropper a couple times a day until she stops licking it. This will be important for a few days after she lays the eggs too.

We noticed she was drinking alot more just prior to her surprise lay. Do you know any thing about the success rate of having them spayed?

I have discussed it with my vet and he feels it is nearly 100%. But, I think it depends on the skill and knowledge of the vet your using. Mine is very good with reptiles and has a BD himself.

I considered it for one of mine but decided to mate her instead. It is easier to lay fertile eggs than infertile so the egg binding issue is much greater with unbred females. Your dragon may lay mutiple clutches so you may have to revisit this problem again in a few weeks assuming this time works out OK.

The good part is that females get smarter about laying eggs as they get older so your risk decreases.
