a very mean dragon

velcro Aug 21, 2003 07:33 AM

Someone has a sign up at a local pet store selling their 8 month old dragon and all of its accessories for $50.00...my son's friend really wanted a dragon and went to look at him. When the owner reached down to get it (with gloves on), the dragon hissed and tried to bite him repeatedly. I am told that a dragon can be retrained to be nice and that this one has either been mistreated or not been handled enough. My son's friend has decided not to adopt this dragon for fear that he may not be retrainable. I cannot take him into our house as we have a houseful already. But, I can't help but to feel horrible for this little guy and wondered if anyone in the local area of Peoria Illinois might be reading this and want this guy? I am sure that the owner (who is a teenager) would go down on his price. What should I do? Any advice? I offered to buy him for my son's friend and hope that he would become a nice boy.

I have never met a dragon I couldn't love. In my experience, even the meanest dragons can be "retrained" with love and time. This task may not be for a beginner let alone a child beginner. A dragon bite is painful and not something to be taken lightly. If you do get it make sure it is handled under strict adult supervision. BTW gloves are not a good idea as you can not feel the dragon and the dragon cannot feel you.

Call Doug Holmes at the Glen Oak Zoo, he can check with the local herp club (he is a member) and see if any are interested. I am in Peoria but just bought 2 little ones for my kids.
