how to keep fire ants out of enclosure?

i was just wondering if any of you have any tips you can share for keeping fire ants out of outdoor enclosures?

How is your enclosure set up? Smaller pen? Half your yard?

First you'd probably want to make sure there are no nest inside the pen itself, if so you'd have to remove them.
To keep them out, maybe a line of dichotomous earth (there's also a human grade that's safer to pets) around the outside of the pen? That's the best suggestion I can think of that would not put any pesticides or insecticides near your pen.

If you can find the nest a ways away from the pen, use the poison granulars made for killing off ant nests.

I am planing to build an enclosure this weekend, something small to start out with probably 8x8. Just trying to plan ahead as much as possible. thanx for the suggestions.
