Question about breeding possibilities

oc-balls Sep 06, 2007 03:24 PM

First off - thank you to everyone who voiced they're opinion on Blonde vs. Lemon.
I still don't know which variety I'll get. I just know I want it to be as bright yellow as possible.

My long-term breeding plans are to produce Snow Balls.
At the present time I have a very modest collection, which includes 1.0 Albino and 0.5 Normal. I also just hatched a clutch of 100% het Albino (I will be keeping the female to breed back to her Albino father). I will attempt to breed my Albino male to all 5 normal girls this coming season.

I know I have a long way to go, to get Snow. So in the meantime, I'd like to produce some Bumble Bees (I think these are just incredible looking snakes!)

So - I hope to find my Pastel at the Anaheim show this weekend, and if I can find the right deal, I'll also pick up a Spider.

My question is: Knowing what I want to produce, and what I have available. What gender of each would you recommend I purchase?

Male Pastel & female Spider, or female Pastel & male Spider? Would one way be cheaper than the other? What would work out best in the long run? Or am I just crazy for asking this?

Thanks for your time!!!
Ken

I am also in love with bumblebees, so this was a fun question to think about.

I'd get... hmm. Male spider, female pastel. Why, do you ask?

Pastel and spider are both dom - if I could I'd get males of both but it'd take longer to produce the desired morph, bumblebee.
However, the first year, breed the spider to the pastel as well as to half your normal girls - you can sell the offspring for more than you would for pastels (money for future projects yay!). Make your hets, and then with one of the female spiders (or bumblebees, even) you hopefully produce from one of your three or four clutches, breed that female to the albino. Albino spiders and albino pieds are the only albinos I'm really fond of, and the spider gene just makes em look so cool! A poor man's white snake, if you will.
The female pastel is likely to produce, sooner or later, at least one male pastel/bumblebee, which can be bred back to her to make a superpastel (killerbee, if the odds work out!). In her first year she'll produce all pastels anyway, and you'll have more offspring to possibly make even more bumblebees with. Since the spider is the only morph you have that would look good with the pastel, having only the one female is fine for your purposes, since the goal of a male pastel is to breed to as many appropriate female morphs as possible.

Am I making sense? You could switch it and get a female spider, male pastel, but you would either have to focus on an albino spider project or a bumblebee project. This way, you could eventually have both going at the same time.

Im ALSO working to get some Bees! Wow, Is a Bee like the new favorite morph? I have a male Pastel and a female Spider. I would reccomend getting the opposite of what I got. I have the male pastel because I can produce pastels sooner. I have an adult normal.

Everyone wants bees cause they're so frickin pritty! The spider pattern is really shown off by the bright yellow of the pastel, and the low amount of black and the white sides makes the yellow look even yellower.

You just can't beat that! :D (well, maybe if you put it on a pied...)

Have you seen the Bumblebee pied? WOW They are amazing!

I'd go male spider and male pastel.
You can always pick up some more normal females, make your own morph females and them mix and match.
(Breed the male pastel to the female spiders and the male spider to the female pastels.)
You could probably breed this season. I'm sure you can get a lemon pastel and spider male for a decent price.
Breed the spider to two females, Pastel to two females and albino to one. (Since you already have one clutch of hets.)

I'm partial to Lemons. I have a NERD line lemon I got from Tony Hurt at SnakeEvolutions.com
He's a great guy, and the snake is AMAZING. I'll be breeding him this year!

Hey Ken -

My suggestion is that since there's really not much of price difference get a female of both. Raise them for a year or so and see where your heart is - and then by the male(s) - somewhere between next weekend and 09/10 breeding season you may fall in love with a project you can use one for and then use the other for the Bumblebees.

Male Spider, female Pastel. Breed the Spider male to at least one of your normal girls after he finishes with the Pastel. Spiders are worth more, so of course it makes sense to do this than to do it with a Pastel.

Now once you get a Bumblebee male from your Spider X Pastel, keep him. Raise him up and breed him back to his Pastel mom. Now you can produce two new mutations. A Super Pastel and Killerbee.

Even if Spiders and Pastels were the same price, and even if you like Pastels more and would rather use a Pastel male against normal females, I would still get the Pastel female for the Bee project. For the simple reason that Pastels are Co-dominant and the possibilities for Super Pastels and Killerbees are much more worth having a Spider female.

Though, if you had a Spider female, breed the Albino to it for obvious reasons.

In short, get 1.1 each of Spiders and Pastels. You can likely do this for $800.
