Questions on hatching mediums

sgraff Sep 06, 2007 05:44 PM

I have seen different methods for incubating eggs on different substrates. Some are a vermiculite mix, some the mix but with an eggcrate on top. Also water with an eggcrate suspended above it and no mix. Any thoughts on what is the best???

we stick with the old tried and true method of vermiculite/water mixed 1:1 by weight and then tweak as needed. My theory is why fix what isn't broken. Alot of people have success with the no substrate method but I haven't tried it and more than likely never will. I have never lost an egg due to incubation problems and actually have never lost an egg without it looking like it wouldn't make it from the time of laying. I understand that this method takes more up-keep but I like looking at and tending to the eggs during incubation.

In the wild, the females coil around the eggs to incubate them. So I lean towards incubating in air over water to keep the humidity up, if and when I ever get ball python eggs. YMMV.

I used HatchRite last year and had a great season.
