Problem feeder question....

phiber_optikx Sep 06, 2007 08:17 PM

So only 2 out of my 5 hatchlings are eating well. Can someone come make them eat for me? This was there 5th week without eating so I decided it was time to force feed them limbs. What are the other tricks?
The "Won't Take" list.....
Frozen
Live
Decaptitated/brained
tuna
overnight

Don't want to deal with anoles so what is left? Maybe the force feeding(however meager) will put a little vinegar in them)

Try washing the pinks with a mild soap like Dove, then rinse well. Surprisingly this works alot of the time.

My baby Alterna had trouble feeding at first as well. On the Gray Band forum, some posters gave me excellent advice. The one I used should also work for corns as they too eat lizards. I got anole and killed it. Skinned a small part of it and placed the skin on the face of a f/t pinky. The GB took it without hesitation. I only had to do that one time and the GB started taking unscented pinks the very next feeding. I still have the anole frozen in case I need it!!

Let them starve to death. No , try tease feeding them. If they grab the pink try to get them to chew on it. Sometimes they will start to swallow it. As a last resort force feed them. Just because we want them to eat mice doesn't mean they want to eat mice. When they get big enough they will eat. If they don't make it , then it wasn't meant to be!
The idea is to get a meal in them before they get to weak!

A less messy alternative to feeding limbs is tails. They are full of calcium, and believe it or not, a force-feeding or two of adult mouse tail actually can put a little weight on a baby corn.
I think time is usually what it takes, although five weeks is about when I've had it with fussy feeders.
