hibernation?

cfresh79 Sep 06, 2007 11:46 PM

When do balls usually go into hibernation? I thought it was coming up soon. Should I try to feed him extra beforehand, or are normal feedings okay. I know there is a possibilllity he will be off food for a few months, and i should ck his weight periodically, just wondering when and what to expect. Thanks

I tend to lean towards a male that is not fat, but no too thin. A fat snake can sometimes be a lazy snake, and not want to do his business. That being said, leading up to breeding season I would feed once every 10 days, and just a weaner sized rat should be good. I have heard many breeders give this advice, and I think it works. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

They do not really hibernate, How old is your snake? A baby will and should continue to eat through winter.the youngest I have seen them stop eating is a year old.

Melindaste is right. Ball pythons do not technically "hibernate," but some adults will refuse to eat during the winter months (even if you keep their cage the same temperature year-round). Breeders will usually intentionally change the temps and humidity in the cage to induce breeding behaviour. However, if you do NOT INTEND to breed your snake this year, don't change your temperatures and the snake will probably keep eating (although maybe less often). If he stops eating, keep offering him food at least once a month just to give him the chance to eat if he wants to.

Intentional cooling periods can be dangerous since that's the time when a python is most likely to get a respiratory infection or become too thin from fasting, so keep the temperatures warm and let your boy enjoy his bachelor life : )
