Sulcatas with runny noses??

damesta Sep 07, 2007 04:32 PM

I picked up 3 juvie sulcatas from the same owner about a week ago, two are around 8" and one is around 6". All three of them have had runny noses pretty much since they got here, its clear, theres no colored/thick discharge or anything like that and their appetites all seem to still be pretty decent. They definitely prefer leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes, etc. over any kind of grass hay but they do still graze and snack on the timothy hay I leave out there sometimes. There is a very minimal amount of jaw clicking/sneezing from a few of them but it rarely happens. I'm thinking its just because of the stress of shipping them and changing their habitat, climate, temp, humidity, and diet all at once. They came from living mainly indoors in Indiana (they did get to graze outside during the day sometimes), to living outside full time in south Texas(Houston area). It does look like its been getting a little better in all three of them over the past few days and the previous owner says he never had any problems with them. Anyone have any opinions?

What is the minimum temperature your Torts are at?
Do your Torts also have slightly puffy eyes?

There are a few things your tort could have - I think it is an upper respiratory infection (Not always runny nose syndrome) or a respiratory irritaion from changes in dust/humidity.

My two yellow foots sometimes have nasal discharge when:
* There is a reduction in humidity (their substrate dries out)
* The temperature reduces below 18 degrees
* Lack of vitamin A (I doubt you will have this issue as you feed yours on Carrot )

Try and keep them warm at night and see what happens. My Yellow Foots stop discharge within about 2 or three days after I fix the environment issues. (Aka cool house to 22 degrees instead of 18 degrees)

On posting an image of your Torts would help working out what is wrong.

Temp/humidity here is about 24C-27C(75F-80F) with 85-90% humidity at night and 32C-35C(90F-95F) with 60-70% humidity during the day. Their eyes don't look puffy at all to me. Vitamin A shouldn't be an issue they have been supplemented with herptivite and carrots among other things. Hopefully its just an irritation due to the dust, pollen, climate change, etc.
