Pic of Scarlet hatchling...

Patton Sep 07, 2007 06:29 PM

This is one of two that hatched this year from my Richmond Co., Nc. pair. My wife just bought a new camera, so of course I had to test it out on the herps. Enjoy!

They both took skink scented pinky parts before their first shed.
The North Carolina Scarlets seem to start on pinks pretty easily, compaired to other locals. Florida Scarlets seem to be almost impossible to get on rodents.

Interesting -- I have personally had 'good' success with FL elapsoides using the same technique... scented parts... although without fail there will be one or two that exclusively want anoles. Not the best percentage in the world when describing four or five eggs. The point being though I have run into amazing success with WC adults immediately switching over to live and then eventually f/t pinks... This is with such frequency that I would debate their reputation down here (in FL at least). If it had not been a string of successive successes I would chalk it up to shear dumb luck.

That's good to hear. I'm glad somebody is having good luck with Fla. elapsoides. Your adults look huge compaired to mine! I'm assuming that Florida's get bigger than the Nc. elapsoides?

Great snake, great photo -- what more could you ask for. Scarlets, eh? Must have the patience of a saint. The only snake I ever tried that never worked out for me. Great stuff there Phil -- any pics of the parents?
