10 for 10 on these blairs

jim_d Sep 07, 2007 06:53 PM

This clutch hatched out 10 for 10, fertility and hatching sucess with no deformities. I helped slit 2 eggs to be safe, one egg had many lines in it with no hole and the last egg just to be safe.

The eggs at the bottom were bigger, more swelled from touching the substrate I was a little concerned about them having too much water in them (causing water on the brain) but they were fine. For the last two weeks or so I kept the substrate dry or at least did not add water, just a SMALL piece of wet papertowel on part of any eggs that caved in a little.

Also interesting was that they hatched top to bottom, so I cut away the top shells half way through the clutch, although it may not have been nessisary. they hatched in about 70 days, but i am not sure of the temperature but probably below 82 degrees.

Thanks for taking that one out of the gene pool, Bob. Must of got hit with an ugly stick. LOL

Brad, That is no worse that the male that fathered my clutch of 10 in my first post. I hatched him from snakes with good coloration, he just got really ugly for some reason.

Anyway....on the topic of ugly this langtry (proper)locality female(?) was collected by my friend Doug S. in 2001, he actually did keep it to remove it from the gene pool and offered it to me. Not only is she ugly she is all kinked up for the last 7 or so inches, but she is a great healthy snake and feeds normally too, I'm glad i got her. I am thinking of breeding her but with those kinks it might be too risky.

You got to love the ugly ones, they make the good looking ones look even better. Lets start a gallery page for ugly graybands......or ugly grayband of the month

Yikes! You're right. Kudo's for your friend for taking it out of the gene pool! Thats uglier than the one Bob posted. Does make others look better, like you said though. BA

I would not worry about breeding her. I breed a castle mtn female (the only one around) last year. She was severly kinked and layed a viable clutch. Just keep an eye on them, dont feed to much while they are gravid, and do not feed for a second clutch and she should be fine, it is likely that the kinking formed in incubtion and is not genetic.

Thanks mike for the opinion. I will likely try to breed her since I have a locality matching male on loan. She is very large and a little older now, it might be worth a shot. One concern is a partial paralysis (as well as kinks) in the region, I don't know if she can even lift her tail to breed.

you know it is interesting she is w.c. and somehow these kinks were there. It may be possible that she was captive bred and someone released her as a hatchling into the wild at langtry only to be re captured as a two or three year old. I must say she seemed very healthy and normal. I think it is possible especially since she was found right at langtry.

you also got to figure, she would have breed if she was still livin in langtry

True, It may have killed her it may not have. Assuming she can be bred to she certainly would have become gravid prior to reaching this size, and untill now, her diameter was way too small at one part of the kink to pass an egg. Furthermore in my experience smaller snakes lay fewer & larger eggs while older snakes lay more quantity wise and smaller size eggs, I think that will work in her favor as well.
