incubators

GLZ Sep 07, 2007 08:56 PM

Hello all ... I have been seaching this forum for information regarding to the incubators that are being used for BP's, I found a few pictures and a little information but this forum gets so many postings and moves so fast that its hard to find detailed information.

I am wondering if we can get some incubator pictures posted, detailed building instructions, etc ..

I would like to get started on building a nice incubator and im sure many others are as well.

Here is what I used. Mine is actually broken down because I am done for the season. You can fit about 12 of the 6 qt tubs. The cooler is one of the large igloo ones. The tub in the purple square is just a tiny bit smaller and allows for you to stack 3 tubs high with ease. I don’t remember exactly which one it is sorry. Where the red squares are is where you can put your heating element. I used the 8x11" heat tape, spyderrobotics thermostat and an electric thermometer with a probe. Since the top is indented the heat stays far enough away from the tubs. It worked out very well for me this season!

Built this one a year or two ago. It's melamine and works like a charm. Wish I had detailed step by step instructions but I didn't have a digital camera at the time......Next time I build one, I hope to take pics for each step.

That is a nice looking one. How is it insulated?

You shouldn't need insulation with melamine if you use 3/4". All you would need to do is caulk or silicone the joints. The door would need some kind of foam or rubber to let it seal. You could put three latches on the side and it should be done.

it holds the temperature to a degree and I had this in my apartment which was 70-75 deg. I just sealed the inside with caulk and put weather stripping on the inside of the door. You can just barely see in in the pic with the door opened. (it's white along the outside. Anyways I put a pretty thick piece on and this made the door close even tighter which created a nice seal.

The small apartment fridges work great, Already insulated and seal great. I used a 1 ft piece of 11in flex Watt for a heat source. I have a friend that uses a wood cabinet with a light bulb thermostat and fan. He hatches everthing you can think of in it. He keeps it in a herp room so insulation is not an issue.

I made mine from a mini-wine cooler. It has worked like a charm so far, but I think I'm going to need to upgrade to something larger soon.

why use bottles of water vs. a tray? The bottles will only sweat out so much moisture.

water bottles will help fill the voided space...they will also retain heat. If ever there is a short power outage they have kept my incubator above 80 for about 2 hours!

Heres the one I built in mid 06 it will hold hold 18 clutches if packed fully

Heres the one I built in mid 05 for the 06 season that I use for back-up it will hold 5 clutches

And my first one I built was in 04 its a little thing it would hold 2 maybe 3 clutches at the most.
