What could have been a tragic ending...

caramia12 Sep 08, 2007 09:30 AM

Woke up this morning browsing the web and all of a sudden I hear a rustling sound. It didn't sound like your normal house creek. So the first thing I did to investigate was check the snake cages. Next thing I noticed is the lid on my MBK snake container are not secured. I lift the cover and sure enough she's gone. OMG! We're talking about a 4 1/2 ft snake just under 1000gms. So I look around the house where I hear the noise but still can't find her. Next, I go into the kitchen and lo and behold there she is, half way into my gecko's tank licking her chops. She was postioning herself to strike. Lucky enough I grabbed her before she did strike and saved my gecko from being breakfast. As bad as this story could have been it could have been a lot worse. A few feet away was my teacup 8 week old chihuahua that weighs about 1.5 lbs sleeping in her cage with the door opened! I just got her this past Sunday. Can you imagine? Anyway the story has a nice ending.
This is the first time in the 3 years since I've owned snakes that I left the clips off.

Whew! Lesson learned...

I would have payed $100. to get a pic of an MBK eating a dog.

Back in the early 80's the late Lloyd Lemke talked to a lady on the phone who wanted to buy some snakes from him. In passing she mentioned she was feeding her redtail boas large goldfish. Lloyd told her she must me mistaken but she was very seroius about this fact. So Lloyd told her she could have the snakes for free and he would even deliveer them to her house personally to see this and take pictures. He did and got pics. He later showed them at the southwest herp clud at a slide show presentation.

I always had this fear of my woma python eating the dog. I never worried about any of my other snakes until now. Today was definitely my wake up call to double, triple check the lids.

Here's my 1.5 lb 8 week old almost king snake breakfast. Had she been eaten, I'd be replacing her in the dog house for a long long time.

Quite a coincidence, same thing happened to a friend of mine years ago. Same species and everything. Unfortunately, he didn't find the snake in time. He got back a fat, happy MBK but was short a nice Leopard gecko. Glad you found yours in time!!
