Potting soil for lay box?

niddy Sep 08, 2007 06:03 PM

I posted this in my vermiculite thread but it's way down there, so here's my question:

She doesn't like the wet sand. What about untreated potting soil for a lay area? (I kinda sorta already bought some lol)

Thanks!
Jeni

Potting soil is fine I've used it in the past. Add some sand to it so it will be easier to dig in. The one big disadvantage with dirt is low and behold it's dirty. lol. I couldn't get my light colored dragons fully clean again until the next shed. That's the main reason I switched to sand.

It's probably a good idea but I never did. Maybe B22 is thinking topsoil not potting soil.

I never had any problems with regular untreated potting soil, other than it tends to have a lot of twigs, branches and rocks in it. But it really depends on the batch you get. Just make sure it doesn't have any chemicals added to it. Mixed with sand makes a good egg laying medium.

Hi
yep am talking about potting soil .
i breeded grashoppers and i use pottingsoil .
those bags lay outside and there can be in some bugs .
normal it not matter if you put a plant in it.
but if you put it in a warm place like cage for grashoppers r terrarium then those bugs can grow faster then normal specialy mites .
then you can better put it in microwave just to be shure.
there can be in mites r other bugs very smal and hard to see with eyes .

Should this also be done for sand?

B22 Sep 12, 2007 07:23 AM

Hi
i use sand that is wasched and heated 350 degree its special for pigneons.
so i not need to do it for the sand .
i only do it for potting soil.
potting soil is organic so it can have bugs.
special when it lay down on the ground in a garden center .
