Rescue king

dinodon Sep 09, 2007 02:08 AM

I went into a pet shop and saw this king in a dirty enclosure, as you can see he hasn't been fed for a long time, I felt sorry for him and decided to buy him, before he died of starvation.
I'm starting him off on small mice till he puts on a little weight.

He looks like a brooksi to me but not too sure, sorry about the bad pic but all I have is a phone cam at the moment. I have no history on him, could any of you give me an educated guess to what he could be ?
I want to use him to breed to my, Goini looking florida king that has no history either.
Thanks

"I'm starting him off on small mice till he puts on a little weight."

That snake looks pretty debilitated. But no reason to give him/her small mice. Give the largest you can get and it will be fine. Right now it needs all the full bodied mice for calcium and protien. Feeding small mice is just a waste of money, time and health. These florida kings (yes it is a "hypo" brooks aka Florida)can handle even larger meals like snakes when starved. It won't hurt their system like a human that is starved.

Good luck on getting him back on track! Post a pic when the weight is back on.

Thank you Bluerosy.
You have helped me quite a lot.Your word is gold in my books.
I'll post pics as soon as he is back on track.
By the way the iffy clutch of eggs, I showed, there was five. The two you said were bad had flys on them the next day the other three, hatched.
If I ever get a chance,to go to the USA, it will be for a snake show, I'd love to me you and buy you a beer. Thats if you drink.
Thanks again.

Well he is thin but hopefully will come around.
Make sure he is well hydrated.
I'd feed him a meal and see what his fecal looks like. Sometimes it can cause a 'bloom' of sorts w/ the parasite bad guys and cause a regurge. Better to clean a small mess I guess.
If you have the slightest doubt take him to a vet for a checkup.
I bet he's just been neglected.
Good luck.

Mark,
You bring up a good point with hydration. Sometimes a small water dish for an emaciated snakes like this is not good enough.

Allow him to soak (if he wants) by providing a large water dish in his cage. At least for the time being. Also keep an eye on his stools. Smelly or runny stools = needs medication. But i would not worry about that for the time being. You can get healthy looking snakes and still get parasites.

Oh and i will definetly look forward to meeting you and I will take you up on that beer!! Hope you can make it down here for next for years Expo!
