New BRB Owner. Acclimation Question.

reako45 Sep 09, 2007 05:48 PM

New to this foum as well. My wife bought a beautiful '07 male Ecc (will post pics when we get a new camera). He's quarantining & getting acclimated to his new tank. I've read several care sheets and talked to a few folks who keep them, but as w/ my other snakes (Pits & Kings) I appreciate the wealth of knowledge available from the myraid of folks on theses forums who've been working w/ and keeping snakes that I'm interested in for years. Wondering how to treat a new BRB. Is the acclimation basically the same process as for colubrids? I leave my new snakes alone for 3 days in their new enclosures , offer a small meal, leave alone 3 more days, offer another small meal then attempt to handle. Any advice insight greatly appreciated.

Member and congrats on joining the E.C.C. club!!

Your comments on acclimation are very reasonable. The only thing I'd add is it's still OK and even necessary to do the daily cage check and clean when soiled. IMO the entire point of leaving him alone is to lessen the stress of going to a new home. As he get's used to his new surroundings, he will also need to get acclimated to you. The daily check and cleaning as needed will be part of that. He needs to be used to the opening of the cage and learn that the big bad hand is not so bad after all.

I'm sure you know a 2007 baby is likely to bite, not a big thing and does not really hurt, just is likely and do not shy away if he does bite. Retreating will reinforce that unwanted behaviour!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new acquisition. What you said sounds pretty good to me. I'd make sure and keep an eye out in his cage just like any snake. Also as you probably know at this age most snakes are pretty defensive and can be nippy. This is not a problem as at this size they can not really do any harm and bites can hardly be felt. It is good idea to handle them as much as possible in my opinion just to get them acclimated to you and to being handled. Good luck with everything and again welcome and congratulations.
