Male and female=same cage? HELP!

FrostDragon Sep 09, 2007 05:50 PM

Okay...I want to get another Leopard Gecko, a female to be exact. I already have one, and he's a male. He's about one year old. I want to put the female and male in the same cage together once the female is as big as him so he can't bully her if she was little if that makes any sense, because my parents will not allow me to get another tank for her. I have everything planned out, I already have a smaller plastic cage for the female...it's only about 1-2 inches smaller. Or maybe I could just use that for all her life...I don't know, because I've seen stuff that says that they have a male and female together. Also, would they breed if I did put them together? Would they fight? And the reason I'm getting a female is so the males don't fight...but nothing ever says that the female and male don't fight, so maybe it's okay...? I don't know, but I need you're help really soon, because my birthdays in a few days and I might get her then.

Thanks, in advance.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but read a care sheet or the leopard gecko manual, you will find all your answers there, and being as you are a young keeper, this is the best thing to do as you will learn much more and be able to anticipate your own problems long before you have to come here and ask.

As for your question about housing a female and a male together, the manual will tell you three important things:

A.) You will get dozens of baby geckos your first year (and if your parents won't let you get a new enclosure for your girl, where are you going to put those?)

B.) You cannot guarantee there won't be bullying between the two, even if they are the same size. Just like not all humans get along, not all geckos do. This is why most breeders introduce males for only a short time during breeding season.

C) Don't expect you female to live very long. The constant stress of constant mating and egg laying that will occur with only one female and one male could kill her in short time. When breeders house a male permanently with females it is almost exclusively in a harem format. That way no one female is under the male's constant urges.

IMHO the idea is irresponsible. Just stick to one gecko, if you are young, taking care of one gecko may be all the free time you have for now. When you have your own space, then you can add more cages and will have more experience behind you. Better to make all the mistakes now and later it will be a breeze.

Thank you so much! I actually do have a lot of experience with geckos and reptiles in general. I grew up with them and my Dad tought me everything I know, and that's a lot! And, not to mention my litte guy Sora has put me through more than I can handle sometimes; but no matter what it is we always come through it together. I believe that I am ready and I will take your advice to having two seperate tanks for both of them. I just hope that my parents will allow it! Thank you so much!
