How in the world can a responsible policeman fire his weapon upward without thinking about where his bullet will land. Even the basic gun safety saying is "always look beond where you will shoot". I guess the term "bubba" comes into play here!
Oh well, I guess he had to learn the hard way. I'm very sorry for the family that has to endure this.

Who can remember that video that made it around the internet with that DEA or some type of officer doing a demonstration:
Held up a glock .40
Stated he was the only one in the room qualified to handle it
stuck it in his pants and blew a slug into his thigh
finished the presentation with a limp
Classic.. But he is one big step up on this guy here that let his irresponsibility end the life of a child.

I think it just shows how irrational people get when something involves a snake...they become terrified and tremble, and make hasty decisions without thinking. It's sad they are scared of something so harmless simply due to ignorance. It's like the forest ranger that shot off his knee cap this week trying to kill a snake that "attacked" him. I don't claim to know everything about everything, but I know quiet a bit about animals because I've taken the time to learn about them. knowledge and respect will always be better than ignorance and fear. I think Yoda put it best when he said "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

Recently one of our forest rangers here in Mississippi shot his knee cap off while trying to shoot a snake that was "attacking him." He may lose his leg. And the snake got away.
