The late, late show.

zefdin Sep 10, 2007 11:58 AM

It is interesting to watch how this season is playing out with all the really, really late clutches hatching. It has got to be putting pressure on people to sell, as they have all these babies so late in the year, and here we are less than 30 days from sending them into the cold cycle to breed again...wow!

I've seen spider males for $300 already and you gotta expect that people are gonna really try and empty the racks before winter gets here and it's too cold to ship for 4 months.

Interesting stuff to watch.

In actuality the wholesale prices of animals has gone up since daytona. Supply is in reality more limited now than it was at this same time last year. There are still several large shows before now and the end of the year and from all accounts it was rather slim picking in Anaheim. Also a fairly large percentage of balls produced in the country come from Florida where we are not 30 days but more like 100 days until cool down.

Further holding and feeding babies is actually much much more easy to do in the winter than the summer when mice supplies are much lower because of heat and higher overall demand. Few breeders especially any of any real significant size can and prefer to ship in the winter months as the cold is actually a much smaller hazard than the heat of the summer.

Thanks.

I swear I wear shorts in mid-January all the time! Temps swings in FL suck though - 85 Monday, 60 Tuesday, back to 80 Wednesday. Sigh

This past winter I went to class one day in shorts and sandals, the next morning I woke up to a foot of snow! Not to mention unbearable cold and high winds.

Jay, before florida I was in Vegas for three years and ohio before that. Ohio was cold and wet or hot and humid. Vegas was just hot and brown.... I've really loved florida the last 4 years now. I do hate the cheap windows they put in new homes, my tax and home insurance bills but all in all Florida's a great place....

Jay
85 to 60 then to 85 again. Try 30 to -20 in less than 24 hours. It happens, and that's not including the windchill. We had about 6" of snow on the ground the day before I took these last winter. The arbor is about 8' tall and the mound in the upper left corner of the second photo is a parked car.

the last time i checked here in michigan, most around here start to cool october 1st. as for shipping here in december thru febuary, i dont think so, temps very seldom reach 30 or higher! i bought a male pastel in october and waited til march to get him cuz they would not ship here till it was over 50 degrees, as for cooling down i think most people have there cooling down period when they chose to, thats why i heard bob clark say he has had balls born in every month of the year!
this is just my 2 cents!!!...............later .....boadave

zefdin Sep 10, 2007 04:00 PM

I guess most of the breeders are in Florida, so it doesnt matter what the rest of the nation is doing? I thought most people cool down in Oct. - Nov..but I guess anytime is fine? Anyhoo - it really doesnt matter what anyone "says" in the end - right. I still saw spiders going for $300 and a adult male Cinny for $700-$800, etc...etc.. and that tells me something completely different than what people "want" to believe.

But - what they hey, its Miller Time---{punch}--I am outta here.

neilgolli Sep 10, 2007 04:23 PM

somewhere for something no matter what industry.

I still think that its funny that in this industry one or two people sell something cheap to the public and everyone thinks thats the new baseline price. We are an industry still growing and finding our roots. People freak out when they hear wholesale prices, call them behind the scenes shady deals???? No, like all REAL industries we are starting to develop producers, wholesalers, retailers and end users.

My neighbor is a VP for Jim Beam, because I can buy a case off of him for what most pay for a bottle should I expect that when I go to the grocery store?

99.5% of buyers should be buying PETS, should be working on growing a collection of animals that they love and treasure. They should breed them if they desire to make something new or sell / trade for something else to widen their collection not to be the next millionaires.

There should be no concern for price in virtually anyones minds INCLUDING small medium and large breeders. People (end users) should buy what they want, what they like and plan on having great PETS for a long long time. I'm not trying to paint some hunky dory story that life is all peaches and cream but life is pretty good, sales have been good, I love my animals, I love what I do and am able to make a full time living off of them but I also work very very hard, long hours. I talk on the phone more than any two highschool girls combines, I often sit down for dinner with a trail of bedding leading to the table and have snake poo hanging off my elbow but I love it...

you said it perfectly Neil. We spent ALOT of money on our vanilla project when there was only one cross with them, the super vanilla ghost. it was and is still one of my favorite if not my favorite crosses produced. Am I upset that the price has fallen to the level of much much more common morphs? NOT AT ALL!!! We have the nicest vanilla known, a truly unique animal that whenever anyone sees him, they want him. The new crosses produced last year and this year (while not what we hoped for) are awesome and the possibilities are endless and we are one of the very few people with a breedable female (can you say super vanilla this year). Prices fall, it's a fact of life in this market right now. If you keep your animals and not panic you will make your money back and a profit. If you want to make a living at it, you must do ALOT OF HARD WORK!!!! I see first hand how much you have to work to be a full time breeder and I want none of that, lol. For those like me and my wife, we want to have a collection of top notch animals, cover our expenses and maybe pay for a vacation every year. We have invested close to 40k in this hobby (which is nothing to those that do it full time) and if it takes 10 years to make that back oh well, WE LOVE THESE ANIMALS. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL, WITH COLORS AND PATTERNS YOU CANNOT GET IN ANY OTHER SNAKE SPECIES. If we can produce 30-50 clutches a year even if the average selling price is $150 we will still make a profit in a short amount of time. Spiders at $200, good I say. All those people that can't afford $500 for a good quality animal could afford one then.

PS we spent 3500 on this spider male last year, do you think I'm unhappy with him, heck no. YOu should see his babies (they are all being held back).

turantulas are the way to go. CB babies will SELL, and if you have 1000 babies from 5 or 6 pairs then you'll be swimming in it.

Yea I dont start my cool down period until the last week of November, I live here just south of Columbus Ohio. It gets cold here but not quite Michigan cold and I still wear shorts year round imagine the looks I get in winter when Im delivering beer LOL!!! Im still waiting on a clutch to be laid from a 100% het Desert Ghost male I got late in the season from Patrick Powers at Prehistoric Pets bred to a normal female that I really didnt even expect to go this year. So Im keeping my fingers crossed for a nice size clutch and all females.

Prices go down for two reasons, supply/demand, and quality. The people with the morphs more closely related to the original (with spiders) and the people that breed for quality are the ones selling more snakes and getting more money for them. Everything's been "late" this year in Florida but it can only help with prices.

Saw a bee in Daytona for like 1200 though, made me want to buy it for five next year HA! I guess we have Morphking to blame for all of this. It would be funny if their legal fees outweighed their 135 thousand dollar profit.

Effort. It is work, it does take time to build a name. I've said it hundred times and will say it again I LOVE KINGSNAKE for what it has done for the reptile world, for being the first and largest site to bring high end animals to the world wide market HOWEVER do not expect to sell 100k worth of product for a $100 a year advertising budget.....

Really bad "turn & burn" attitude there- why do you think people with late clutches are just looking to "dump their animals"? I had a "late" clutch hatch 2 days ago, a super pastel male, a bumblebee male, 2.1 pastels, and a normal. I'm keeping most of them, yay for me! If I want to sell them, yay for me. I'd really be better off getting them a bunch larger and selling them next year- yay for me!

Why do we always have newbies come in and give the "sky is falling" post?

Watch and learn- remember, it is better to keep silent and leave them guessing than to open your mouth and give away your ignorance....

Go back and read all of zefdins posts, you will see what he is all about. Most of his posts mention how morphs will fall etc etc wait a month they will be half price etc etc

in a nutshell he cant afford the morphs he likes so he sits back and hopes and dreams for all markets to crash so he can afford the animals he wants. He is sour grapes. Negative dude

zefdin Sep 11, 2007 10:01 PM

You are feeling sleepy...sleepy...it feels like 1 year ago...sleepy..some genious gone idiot says:

CIN MALE 4K
BREEDER NORMAL FEMALES 350 EACH TIMES 8
10 SLOT RACK 400-500
EXTRAS 500

If your male gets 4 females gravid and they average 5 eggs each thats 20 eggs with 50 50 odds you should have 10 cins,,, if you sold em all at half market value you would still make 10k profit.

I see lots of people who arent business people giving advice,,,,

If you wanna do it for the hobby do it for the hobby,, if you wanna do it for money do it for money,,, but dont sit here and tell me it will be 5 yrs to see a profit,,,,,,,

ha..ha..ha says the idiot sooth-sayer while he robs from the wannabe ball tycoons pocket
