Kurnool: A giant turtle was caught by fishermen at Sunkesula barrage across Tungabhadra river in the early hours of Sunday.
Forest Range Officer Damodar Reddy told The Hindu that the turtle weighed over 100 kg and measured 145 centimetres in length and 80 centimetres width.
The amphibian was aged around 60 years. After receiving information from the fishermen about the catch, the Forest Department officials rushed to the spot and took the turtle into custody.
With the help of a local private veterinary practitioner, the turtle was treated for minor injuries it suffered on its shell while it got caught in the net.
The wildlife authorities at Hyderabad and Kurnool advised the local forest officials to let the turtle it into the wild again if it was in fit condition.
Mr. Damodar Reddy said as the injuries were minor and harmless, the turtle was again let into the reservoir.
