Also, I need opinions! O/T

Raveness_d Sep 10, 2007 11:34 PM

This weekend is the big Expo here in Ontario. I'm debating on what should come home with me. I really only have room for one new pair (or at least, I'm trying to be good and tell myself so!)
and I'm teetering between 1.1 VBB's and 1.1 Black Milks.

Of course, I'm always on the lookout for nice BRBs, too.

Soooo... opinions? Suggestions? Advice?

Go to town! What would you do?

Well, of course Womas are lovely.

The Womas (and BHPs) I've seen at the Expos here have never been for sale, sadly.

There are still Womas available out west here from a couple different sources.

Raveness_d Sep 11, 2007 09:26 PM

I had no idea, thanks for pointing that out.

I like Womas, they are very nice looking snakes... I think I'll continue admiring from afar, though.

Yeah I'm in the same boat, only in my case it's that hefty price tag that's keeping me away for now.

rainbowsrus Sep 11, 2007 12:36 AM

The big shows and expo's don't always have the best animals except for those with the hefty price tags. Private breeders will have the best stuff, shy away from stores. I know folks from several stores who have come out and said they do NOT bring the better animals to the shows. Their reasoning is because the shows typically have competition that drives the prices down. They can usually sell there better animals at full and higher prices even at the store where peeps are not expecting discounts.

So, look around, Get there early, know what the typical prices should be. You may find a deal or even a great animal for the right price. Just beware and don't shop by price alone!!

I think it was Eddie Kim that was having the Boa I bought taken out right as I had just decided to buy it and was pulling out my deposit. Not saying he would have bought it but the really hot ones and the really cheap ones go first.

Thanks Dave.

The Miss Expo tends to be pretty respectable, most of the tables are run by private breeders, which is wonderful. I already know who will have the gaigeae and beauties, both from excellent sources.

The BRBs are another matter altogether, quality animals have been difficult to find thus far (for me, anyhow), and there aren't alot of sources as of yet that produce them over here.

As far as getting animals shipped here from the US, well, we all know how fun that is. :P

It's really hit or miss with anything other than BP's and Corns over here, as far as variety goes.

Danielle,
...I think you have answered your own question. If the BRBs are not readily available that is what you should be looking for to breed. I get lots of requests for BRBs from Canadians and they tell me they have a hard time finding them for sale in Canada. BTW, I had a friends Blue Beauty snakes for sale on my table at Daytona. They are pretty snakes but somehow just do not seem as interesting as a boid. And, I had Black Milks and they were pretty neat snakes. The neatest thing about them is watching them turn from tri-color milksnake pattern to black in the course of a few months.

I do plan on breeding BRBs, definitely. Both because I love the species, and because they are hard to find here. As of now, I have one pair, but am looking for another male and a few females to add.

I also would like to get into some difficult to find colubrids, like the Black Milks or VBBs, I just can't seem to decide which. I'm leaning toward the gaigeae, simply for ease of keeping, general temperment and lack of availablity. As far as I know, there is only one person producing them in Canada.

I was just curious as to what others would suggest of these two.

Either way, I have a few years of research and growing snakes before any clutches/litters are born.

I agree with what Dave has said. I also feel for you, as I know the number of breeders is much fewer than the US and there are laws preventing (or least making it very hard) to get animals from the US).

To prove Dave's point - I would guess he has a fairly large list for his 07 babies. He had stated he has a show coming up, but will holdback his better animals for those of us who are on his lists.

I'm in a bit of a unique situation, I have more folks waiting for BRB's than I have BRB's to sell (yet). If I had filled all the waitlist "orders" and/or all ones that were turned down by the waitlist folks, I would take those animals to the show(s). I would also have the show price on "normals" and have those hotties at the hottie price!!

Depends what your priorities are really. It seems only a few up here are working with either Black Milks or VBB's but at least out west here we see some VBB's, so I'd snatch up some Black Milks asap. I'd guess PCPC has some of Roy's Gaigae?

Always a demand for them it seems if you plan on breeding & selling some offspring, while I've seen firsthand that VBB's everyone loves to look at, yet nobody seems to buy (and at sub $100 prices too).

If you like VBB's more then definitely grab those though, beauty looking snakes.

Just my input.

Raveness_d Sep 11, 2007 09:29 PM

Yes, the gaigae I'm looking at getting are 1.1 of Roy's '06's.

I like both VBBs and BMs, and would like to get a pair of each eventually. I'm just trying to be good about not bringing too much home at once.
