Love is in the air......

My male Womas have been trying to get to the females in the cages above them for the past couple of weeks now. Tonight, I gave in. No cooling has taken place, but the boys were starting to rub their snouts raw! Courting behavior was nearly instantaneous, even w/ the male that had shown no interest for either female this past season. This is what's happening less than an hour later.

Out of curiousity, has anyone successfully bred this species without cycling them? I know there's guys that do it w/ Carpets, but I'm curious about the Womas.

BTW, no more nose rubbing for the boys!

How big is this python? looks huge, oh boy! I have to hatchlings at home, vicious as could be! its going to be a wild ride if there the same at that size!

FRoberts Sep 25, 2007 04:06 PM

she is like 8 feet long. Most are a little nippy when neonates...mine is rather docile, I have heard from others you get what you give, the more you interact with a snake, the more docile it most times because it looses it's fear and the aggression along with it. Do not under estimate this snakes power...they deserve the protocol some people apply to the larger pythons. Better safe then sorry...

I have never heard about this with womas...but I do think we do not know all that much about most boas and pythons. Most people use a certain strategy without deviating to get a desired result ( cook book approach : self included )We need to find out what is and what is not necessary...I have bred retics with and without cycling...I have several friends that bred and also I have bred colubrids with no hibernation...I must say with the colubrids there was no noticeable difference in the results...with Boids little difference...but the limited breeding's I have studied really have no concrete scientific merit due to the sample size involved...still makes one wonder...BTW my male retics started their mate searching behavior in late July/early august...I usually do not have to deal with them till sep/Oct...we live rather close so maybe the difference in temps are making them interested earlier then usual...Ball males same thing...I am already seeing the same thing you have seen with your womas...I know some of my pythons need little to no cycling 5 to 10 degrees...to get them going...but 70 to 90 also works as well...the temp thing most likely varies between species...esp with different parts of the world...best info for us is Australian data that clearly shows the 6 month difference in the snakes breeding season...I LOVE AUSTRAIN DATA.....TALK LATER...I also put them together ( some retics) to calm their hormonal asses down lol...

Just received an e-mail to "get the incubator ready" LOL. Lateralis mentioned witnessing this behavior on more than one occasion, so I'll hope for the best. I also wasn't planning on dropping my Carpets very low this year anyway. Misting, from what I've seen, has a much more pronounced effect on libido than temp manipulation alone. Although I'm not ruling out the possibility of it being a combination of the 2. I figure, if I can achieve successful propogation without having to drop temps unnecessarily low in my entire room, why not give it a shot?

Hey Mike!

Yep, I've sure seen those Woma babies of yours...in fact, I've got one of em about 3 ft. away from my computer right now.

Danny boy is an eating machine!!! What a great animal he is, and you are an awesome breeder. I'm totally satifsfied with the little guy. He's eaten THREE pinkie rats since last week. And, he's almost constantly on the move.

Take care, and good luck with your new love fest. Probably more great babies to come.

Chris

captnemo Sep 12, 2007 09:46 PM

Thanks Chris...make sure you don't overfeed him...I've noticed these guys will eat non-stop if you let 'em and if you push 'em too fast, they wind up pinheaded.

As for my adults, the boys have settled down and aren't showing much interest anymore, so I think I'll separate and cool them like I had originally planned.

BTW, you may get an inquiry from Paypal regarding your satisfaction w/ our transaction.
