WTF are always on ground... bad?

Voltron23 Aug 21, 2003 12:07 PM

Well, I read in a GTF post that if the frogs are always hanging out on the ground, it's not good... what the hell should I do about this? I have a 20 gallon long tank... and I have been trying to find a 20 gallon high... but I can't... should something change?

It's not a terrible thing, I wouldn't stress that bad.

Do you have enough spots for them to hide or perch up higher. It maybe that they have tried to sit up higher and your plants aren't supporting them of they feel a bit exposed if you don't have sufficient coverage up the top.

If you have lots of places closer to the ground where it is more denser they will tend to stay down there because they feel more secure.

Also are we talking about day or night? My WTF never leave the floor at night hardly, Climbing all around, sitting on the water bowl, at the side, hunting under things for any left over crix etc.

Daytime they are basically up the top but I have made the top of the tank very dense so they feel hidden and secure while they sleep.

wtfgirl and checirecat covered most of it, but......

what is your set-up like? temps? humidity? height of enclosure? if you have an heat pad underneath your aqurium he could be sitting on the ground trying to get heat. also, if your temps are to hot a frog will often go to the ground to cool of. it really depends on your heat source.

Can you lay the tank on one side so that you have a very high tank? It would be much higher than a 20 high, but it could work

Well, If I tipped it up on it's side... then the cover to the tank would be messed up... as it would also be on it's side. I'm checking around for a 20 gallon high tank.... and I'm not exactly sure how to give them more cover up top... if you have any pictures of your vivs, that would be greatly appreciated

it is a 70 gallon planted vivarium, plants consist of monstera, aspidistra, pothos, birdnest fern. to make aboreal hide spots, use some corkbark and glue it on to the side of the tank with good quality silicone, so the frog can hide. you can also use some aboreal climbing plants.

What I did to create little high up perches was get a few pieces of acrylic sheeting about 1/4 inch thick and cut it the size of a playing card.

Then silicone it into the corner of the tank up high and another one on the other side at a different height etc. This creates ledges that they can quite happily sit on. Mine love theirs.

I actually glued mine on diagonally so it left a gap at the back that I could stuff some branches in so that leaves hang over the ledge making it very secret.

This is a 45 gallon set up I have for 3 male Cuban tree frogs, but it would work for White's as well. I simply turned it on it's end and put a 5 inch piece od plexi across the front bottom (behind the screen) to hold back the substrate. This used to be set up for some Leo's I had so the plexi divider in the middle is now used as a planter. My Cubans hang out on that ledge often.

Yeah, like WTFgirl said, you can keep it diagonally. That's a good idea, just make sure it is stable. It would also look cool, lol.
