Mali Uromastyx Growth rates

mike3 Aug 21, 2003 12:18 PM

Hi, i have been weighing my 3 malis hatchlings since the day they hatched and so far in 1 1/2 weeks they did not seem to gain any weight, infact 1 hatchlings actually lost 1 gram of weight. 2 of them are at 7 grams the other one is at 6 grams. Should i be worried, is this normal. Last week they didn't eat that much, but this week they are just consuming anything and everything i put in their food bowl. I feed them hibuscus leaves, hibiscus flowers, Turnip greens, Collard greens, Raddichio, and 3 wax worms for each hatchling every week. Is there anything i should change or do. It seems that the hatchlings are getting more active, stronger, and a lot faster. Aslo, i heard they grow fast for he first few years but how fast do they grow?? Does anyone have a malis growth chart saying how much weight they gain weekly or monthly for the first year or two?

I can't say with absolute accuracy what the growth rate is since I haven't started weighing my mali until a few days ago. When I first got him (at about 5 months old) he was about 5 to 5 1/2 inches STL. At about 9 months of age (I measured him) he was about 6 1/2 inches STL. A few days ago (he will be a year old Aug. 24th) he was 7 1/2 inches STL and weighs 60 grams.

Hope this helps

I have 3 malis and I weigh them every once in a while to make sure they are good weight (relitive to the last weigh in) I beleive weight is more important than measuring the length...so iwent out and bought a scale. Now, I bought my first uro when he was a baby...I mean small..like 4 to 4.5 inches head to tip of tail...and he weighed 14.7 grams. It will be 3 years in september that i have had him...and right now he is 142.5 grams and is 9 to 9.8 inches...io don't really measure him....in the first year i found that they gained weight much faster than they are now...it seems the female was 165 g's when gravid...and laid 8 eggs, dropped to 93 g's and gained weight very fast...now she has plateaued for a week or two at 140. so I think that if the little ones are eating and pooping then relax. i hope this gives you a bit of insight into uro weights...remember: if the uro isn't loosing weight..(and sometimes it will lose some weight some days [or weeks] it's fine...you should worry about significant or constant weight losses.) So....if the uro isn't lossing weight it's fine
