King refusing meals

RZL36 Sep 11, 2007 08:50 PM

Hello all,

One of my Kings (a female)has really slowed down on the eating and has picked up on the activity. This is her second summer with me. Has she reached/or is reaching sexual maturity? Could this explain why she has stopped eating at her normal pace and moving around a lot? Change in temp? Please help.

Thanks in advance,
RD

If it is getting cooler where you are at night, they do tend to slow down their eating. How long has it been? Derek

Thanks for the quick response Derek.

It has only been a week, but that was only a lone fuzzy. She normally eats two at a "sitting," every 5 days (like clockwork). It's getting cooler here(I'm in Jersey). However, she ate until November with consistency last year, so I'm thinking maybe she's looking for a mate. She is going on two and I'm thinking maybe she's a big girl now. Would this explain the incessant movement? Before brumation last year she really slowed up. Is this kingsnake mating time?

Thanks,
RD

What kind of King is it? I'm in NJ too and it hasn't cooled that much - the weekend was still in the 80's. Other then my Arizona's everything is eating like crazy.

Did something else change? Add a new snake, different enclosure, hides?

It's a regular old Cali King. My South Florida is eating like wildfire. It's been pretty warm up here lately (like you said), so I just can't figure it out. She was eating like a pig until early November last year.

No cage changes at all. I did add a new snake to the room a week ago(a Northern Pine).

I think I just need to stop being paranoid. She can go for months without eating and I am nervous about her slowing down. If she wants to eat, she will eat. Plus whatever she doesn't eat the Pine is more than willing to take down.

Really my only concern is, is the incessant movement and refusal of food the display of sexual maturity?

Thanks for helps guys,

Rich D
