ever heard of this?

amarilrose Sep 12, 2007 08:42 AM

My female just had a perfect shed. I'm happy, except for one little thing; there are some tiny blood smears in her cage. I've seen this before yes, but off the top of my head, I thought it was only males who had occasional blood spotting after/during a shed? Anybody ever heard of or seen this with a female?

I would be so ticked if my female isn't really a female!!

Thanks all,
~Rebecca

i had a female that was very aggressive when she was shedding. she would strike at anything and she would hit her face on the glass and cause some minor bleeding. go get her probed or do it your self.

I need to get her probed... but even more so, I need to finally go get my own set of probes and learn to do it myself. I've only grown up keeping snakes; I should know how to probe by now. I just don't really want to have to pay a vet for his time.... I think that just means I'm horribly cheap.

If you get a pet shop to do it ask them if they can show you how. I myself learned over the internet i cant remember the site but ill look around and post a link if i find it. Its pretty easy as long as you are carefull and not in a hurry you should be good. Im gonna go look for that link now.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's probably from her hemipene!

amarilrose Sep 12, 2007 09:53 AM

...I had thought of that

geez I hope not!!

I checked for signs of shed hemipene though (you CAN find those on males' sheds) and didn't see any. She did shed the insides of her nostrils for me!!

My juvenile female sometimes has a very small amount of blood after a shed. I've found out that she likes to find not a rough spot in the cage to shed on, but a sharp, pointy spot. She'd get started on the sharp bit, nick herself, bleed a bit, and then proceed to have a pretty shed.

Also could be just a small rodent bite shedding off. I've also noticed that when the scab (which I sometimes don't notice until they shed it off) sheds off it can bleed sometimes. I saw this the most with my big female when she was healing after her attack, but I've seen it on a much smaller scale with a couple of the other snakes.

Order a probe kit from LLL! That's what I use. If you see it once, then try it, you realize it's really not that bad. I think I can actually take a video of it for you, if you'd like.

Your signatures always rock Jenny!

You brought up a really good point though - I had forgotten she had been bitten. This is my addicted-to-live-mice female that I am trying to convince to eat a healthier diet. I got a batch of really violent mice a few weeks ago (I HATE mice!)... they were amazing - don't think I've ever seen a group of mice so determined to bite everything in their path, but not each other! Sure enough, one of them bit the outside of her lower jaw. That made me pretty mad. She took the rest pre-killed. Since then she has shown a renewed interest in pre-killed rats!

I looked at her again this morning, and saw some small traces of blood around her vent - need to check her jaw yet.

Probes are definitely on the list of things to get!

I actually just fed off my entire colony of mice because I came home to find a bunch of babies eating off the mother's FACE. That on top of the constant smell (no matter how often it's cleaned), the not very nice temperments (my rats are so much sweeter!), and how few of my animals actually eat mice...Final straw!

I'll keep my fingers crossed your girl is really a girl!

It's normal. My males and females sometimes do this.
