Awesome find

Hello - never posted on this forum before, but I have a pituophis story and question...

So I just moved from the northeast to Boulder Colorado. I have yet to fully aquaint myself with all of the local herptofauna. I was on my way to a job interview the other day, driving down a 6 lane buisy stretch of road. I mildly swerved to avoid what I first thought was a fan belt on the road. Now I am all about road cruising for herps, but at 9 in the morning, on a busy road is the last place I was expecting to find a 6 footer! Needless to say I was surprised when the fanbelt struck at my car as I passed by. I swerved to the side of the road and started running back towards him. He was in the middle of left lane. I watched half a dozen cars swerve around him before I could run out and grab him. There was absolutely no suitable habitat anywhere in sight. Strip malls covered both sides of the road. I have no idea where he was coming from or going to. I didn't have anything to put him in, so I emptied my backpack and tossed him in there... then I brought him into my interview...hahaha (I was interviewing at a vets office) Must have left an impression cause I got the job!

Anyway I brought him home that night and offered him a mouse and some water, both of which he greedily accepted. The next day I drove around the area where I found him and found a wildlife preserve with some ideal looking habitat, just a half mile from where I picked him up. I released him there. Hopefully he'll find a decent spot to overwinter.

Anyway, I know he is a pit of some kind, but would he be considered a bull snake? Gopher snake?? I have never worked with these guys. I have a field guide on order from amazon, but until then, what subspecies was he?

Nice. I don't know if that's your first Pituophis, but you never forget the first one you find in the field.

Yeah it was my first pit. I debated keeping him, but he was mean as hell and I am short on cage space at the moment. It made me really happy to let him go. I still can't believe where he was and that he wasn't hit.

You have found a Bullsnake, the sayi subspecies. As with most of the Colorado Bulls I've seen, it's a very handsome animal, good luck with it. On the western side of the Rockies, you'll find its cousin, thr Great Basin Gopher Snake. Get both the Peterson Field Guide to the Reptiles and Amphibians of eastern and central North America by Conant, and for those of the west by Stebbins. Colorado is a very cool state to be in if you're a herper, lots of neat stuff. Best of luck!
