gecko tails

carlyquesadilla Sep 13, 2007 10:06 AM

i have 4 females together in a 38 gal tall tank. i just went to feed them and i noticed two of my females had a slice on the side of their tails. it looks as though they were trying to dislocate them as if they were startled. its wierd that they both have them. how should i care for them? they are both open wounds but they dont seemed to be bothered by them, they are feeding fine and wiggling their tails when they eat ect. this group of females have been together for over 2 years without problems. Im scared to pick them up because i fear that they are going to get nervous and try to drop their tails. maybe it is just a cut were they may have attacked each other, but in the same spot? any ideas on what i should do?

This is most likely due to fighting, which can occur at any time, even with groups that have been together for extended periods. It is possible that they got stuck somewhere/somehow in the cage, but either way, you need to house them individually while they recouperate. As for the wounds, any regular antibiotic ointment will be fine.

Why are you housing 4 ground dwelling geckos in a tall tank?

What are the dimensions? My 37g crestie tank is no more than a 20g standard, as it's foot print.

they probably just were fighting the two that have cuts on them are punks sometimes so i think that what it is. as for the tank a 38 gal tank is 36X12.5 inch on the bottom which is much more than a 20 gal long or tall tank. its a tank that I already had and used. They've been happy for years so im sure they will continue to live happily. maybe i just need to feed them more
