Telling a difference between....

savana_man Sep 13, 2007 11:26 AM

I'm going to the Dixie Reptile show this Saturday and I was wondering if there is a visual difference between a possible het and a normal or am I supposed to take the word of the seller? Is there any type of paper work like they do on dogs? I've kept balls before, but I never got into anything but the normals. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

A possible het probably IS a normal. The good news is, in this day and age "possible hets" are pretty much sold for the price of normals. I doubt you'd find a reputable breeder selling a possible het anything (Pied, albino, clown....anything) for more than 100 bucks.

no visual difference - no paperwork - no guarantees - as such it's a gamble no matter who ya buy them from.

last week a guy asked if they were 100% hets.
I said yes.....
he asked how can I guarentee it
I said....I guarentee I sold an albino to the guy and he bred it to make hets and amels
he asked if the price was correct.
I said yes.....
he walked away.......
guess he didn't trust us........

...I know it was a reeeeeal big investment to spend the $25 for a het male.....but Wow.......LOL.....

my friend who owns the ball told me to sell it to him for $50 if he came back .......

.........people suck.....really really suck....

(last show a guy looked through like 5 het males to finally pick that perfect one......again.....$25 is alot....morons......)..

how hard is it to pick the biggest prettiest?......

.......Yes some hets have spots on their heads and look a little better..

but so do normals at times...........

........hets are cheap .........

If you are looking to purchase a het. of any morph you would most likely be better off buying the 100% het. Especially if you are new to this. It will cost you more and will look normal so you might have trouble describing what is so "special" about this animal to your friends and family, but the kicker is this: You will have the piece of mind knowing that if you bred that animal to either another 100% het. OR a homozygous animal you will most likely end up producing what ever it is you are looking for.

Hets. are fairly cheap for most morphs and if you purchase the female now and two years from now pick up a male (possibly even a homozygous male since prices do drop and they may be in your price range by then) you will only be about a year from producing your own.

As far as trusting a breeder... it's kind of like trusting your mechanic. YOU will have to build that trust. This is hard at a weekend show... but you can talk to the seller and if they seem shady to you or you aren't comfortable - walk away. YOU are in complete control of the transaction until the money leaves your hands so don't be bullied or rushed into a purchase.

Adam: there will be 3 or 4 ball python people at the B'ham show this weekend, including the show promoter, Terry Heuring. Feel free to walk around and talk to all of us and find where you are comfortable. I will have several Albino hets. Good luck to you! Tom
