Assist feed a hot?

stringfellow Sep 13, 2007 01:42 PM

I am terrified of hots and would never keep one but I read on this forum that some assist fed his hot. How would you do that (obviously very carefully)? Wouldn't it require you putting your hand near the face of an uncomfortable deadly snake?

Some hot keepers safely tube the animal then assist feed in that manner.

Another option in some cases:

Sponge Feeding

i've always just held the snake behind the head, taken a smaller prey item and coated it in egg yolk and used hemostats to force it down and just grip the snake tight enough to control it and loose up as much as necessary to allow the stats to pass down the throat a bit.

then i just let it crawl around a bit and swallow the prey, maybe sticking a hook under it's body so that it can climb over and aid in swallowing.

i started using gloves after a snake literally sprayed venom and got some on my fingers. i have a lot of cuts on my hands from work and could have been envenomated without ever being bitten if one had been open.

even then, it's not fun when your fingers are an inch away from their fangs. very small margin for error
