Strange Tiny Translucent hatchling...what IS this????!!! Please help.

Starling Aug 21, 2003 02:15 PM

This tiny gecko hatched yesterday and I don't know WHAT to make of it, I have never seen anything like it before. The bands that are supposed to be black are brown, and the bands that should be yellow or orange are a translucent white.

I don't think it could be a dark albino because the eyes are pitch black.

Gecko seems fine despite the small size.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before and what do you think it will grow up to look like? I know super hypos can hatch with brown/purple instead of black at times, and I do have hypo all through my bloodline, but usually those are orange. Do you think this might be a white superhypo? Some other kind of pigment defect, like ghost? Or what?

Also, has anyone ever seen a hatchling this small and did it grow up to be normal? This is the smallest I have ever hatched.

Father was a tang tremper albino het patternless, but I am not 100% sure who the other was. I think it was this reduced spotting gecko of unknown parentage, first offspring from that animal.

When babies have developmental problems or are just very week, they can come out without adequate coloration. I have seen a few week hatchlings from other that were extra small and they tend to be very pale like that. Hopefully it will grow up normally.

It seems okay, but it is very small. It did seem tired when it came out of the egg, hopefully it is not weak and it will grow up healthy. There are no visible defects besides pigmentation.

Does the color in your experience develop after they hatch or stay that way?

I had a friend who bred leos a while back and he got two that were like yours. They were both completely unrelated too so it probably wasn't the parents. One of them died after a week or two bc it was too weak, while the other growed slowly but grew up to be perfectly healthy. He was given to another friend of mine and he looks perfectly normal. I don't know the weight on him but I'de say between 60-80 grams. It is over year old now.

I have heard on a different forum a similar problem with a guy w/ a small, pale hatchling but I don't know what happened to it.

I think it will depend on how weak or healthy it turns out to be, I would just pay special attention to making sure it eats. The rest is not in your hands I think.

I am going to leave it in the incubator a few extra days and house it individually, hopefully it will be okay.

One of my hatchlings hatched out exactly like yours. Like there is no color at all to it.

I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but as it grew and grew and shed more and more, she turned into a beautiful looking gecko.
She is from a SHCT x SHT cross and here is a pic of what she looks like today, except her orange has intensified!!!!

Like a ghost hypo! Did those last body spots dissappear? They look like they will when the lavender goes.

What do you plan on breeding her with? I assume you are holding her back.

While I would love it if this one turned out hypo snow, it seems highly unlikely with the hypotang/reduced spot parentage...however I would not be suprised if she turned out something like yours given her parentage, and that would be nice as well. I will have to take extra-special care of this one though, as she is so small. Hopefully she will grow up big a healthy with lots of TLC.
