Not eating

jimmyeo3 Sep 14, 2007 12:13 PM

A friend of mine has a female gecko and she doesnt seem to be eating very much, and is not growing. She is about 6 moths old. Is this common in geckos, if not what can i do to make her eat more.

It's not normal, but can be caused by several things, not all of which are hard to correct. First thing I'd look at based on my own experience is size of prey items - as mine grew, there were several points where she ate less than she used to, and it always corresponded to times when I needed to bump up the size of crickets she was eating to the next bigger size. She had just lost interest in the smaller ones, and as soon as I upped the size, she started chasing them and chomping them right down. That may be what has happened with your friend's gecko, and would be the first thing I'd check on. The other possibilities are more problematic - parasites or impaction will cause them to lose appetite, so if the prey items are correctly sized, I'd guess a trip to the vet is in order. Here's hoping the crickets are just too small.

I always recommend a double check of husbandry (keeping) practices as a precaution before a trip to the vet, absent other symptoms such as runny stools, etc. How long has she not been eating?
