Flo laid 8 slugs and nothing else late thursday. All the slugs had no sign of embryos in them. Flo is just three years old and is just big enough to reproduce. She looked good the first few months but recently it has been obvious that she was carrying a small litter that had no or at best very few live babies. I could recently palpate the lumps in her but they felt too firm and were spread out too much. I have had good litters from smaller young females but generally they are more likely to slug out than larger and older females. Posting info on the good litters is great but full disclosure on the bad litters provides information that to me is just as educational and important.

Jeff Clark Sep 14, 2007 01:10 PM

Tim,
...Last weight I have for her was during breeding season she was 1650 grams. She looked nice and plump without eating since last observed breeding in early april. I have not measured ber but she is around 5.5 feet long.

Thanks for the info. I'm stilllllll waiting on mine. I also have one that is not large but is an older proven female. Her belly is clearly softer, not hard palpable lumps and hoping it's a few babies. It's Savannah BTW.

My other obviously gravid girls are huge and look to have a lot in the bellies, time will tell what's in there!!

is something by the name of CoolBrew. It is cold coffee but it is a little bottle that looks funny in the fact that you take the top of it and squeeze, it fills up a cup at the top of the container like a shot of expresso and you pour that in a cup. Then add some vanilla creamer and then some milk and that is like crack it's so good. I would use other words but we would lose the thread but y'all have to try it

Thats too bad, maybe next year. You said she was almost 4 lbs right (1650 grams)? Sable is just over 4 lbs now, so I hope she gives me some live ones next year.

At least you do have some good litters to work with!

...Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. I have had years where I had one sucky litter after another with more slugs for the year than live babies. Most litters this year have been good ones. I am still expecting two big litters and one midsize one and one very iffy one. This is still looking like a very good year. If I was trying to make a living breeding snakes this stuff might be stressful. Doing it as a hobby is still fun after 43 years.
...The only problem is that I have too many hobbies and passions. I have not had the kayak in the ocean in two weeks and I am going nuts checking the weather for this weekend as we have more thunderstorms rolling thru tonight.

Bob,
....Kayaking is a great sport. I have been kayaking for about 10 years and paddled canoes for years before that. Kayaking can be lots more exciting than canoeing. It is good exercise and gets you into places no one else can go. We sea kayak and also do some paddling in the local black water swamps. Paddling up close to a shark or gator or manatee can be fun. I am planning to take a course at the national whitewater training center in Charlotte NC soon. I have limited experience kayaking in whitewater rivers. I do some kayak surfing though my current boat is not well suited for it.
