Cool Milk Snake NH South

melissamawn Sep 14, 2007 07:44 PM

As I went outside today with my 3 year old son I saw something in the garden next to the walkway. It was multi-colored and I did a double take to see it was a snake. Sorry, but I am afraid of them. But, it then moved and I grabbed my camera.
I didn't know if it was a pet that got loose or what.
To snake enthusists, I probably sound like an idiot
But, it was rather cool and beautiful, so I wanted to share with everyone that enjoys them.

Probably not an escaped pet. The eastern milk is found throughout almost all of New Hampshire, excepting the northern portion, & even into southeastern Maine & up into Canada. And yes, it is a very pretty critter.

Beautiful eastern milk hatchling. This photo is one that I found earlier this year.

He's doing pretty good, except that he decided to stop eating after about 2 1/2 months of solid feeding. I'll keep trying for a month or so longer and if he doesn't eat I may brumate him???

That is a beautiful snake and you did a beautiful thing in allowing it to live. Sometimes people who are afraid of snakes will assume that "the only good snake is a dead snake", which is untrue. If we didn't have snakes, we would have many problems, including starvation from the rodents eating the food and seed that we need.

Thanks for your message I could never hurt them.
However, I have no problem with feeding decon to the mice in my attic, or chipmunks making homes all over my front lawn. I think my Snake friend is going after these chipmunks. He was right near a couple of the chipmunks homes. I have a feeling this isn't the last time I will see him. I am cheering for my snake friend

It's particularly bright because it's a baby. Eastern milks start off as the prettiest Lampropeltis out there and then turn into one of the least pretty.

We found a few adults a couple weekends ago (see the Phillyherping link below). Some are actually nice looking, but nothing like the strikingly beautiful hatchlings.
